York County Environmental Compliance (EC) has proactively begun investigating stormwater infrastructure, including ponds and channels. Homeowners’ associations and developers may receive a visit from the inspector; and more importantly, may receive a letter identifying required improvements/maintenance. EC is conducting these inspections because everyone in the County benefits from properly maintained and functioning ponds and channels. With that said, please note that the County is only responsible for maintaining County owned ponds. It is important that HOA’s, home owners and commercial developments maintain their own ponds. Do not be surprised, if you get a visit from an inspector and you receive a letter identifying needed maintenance. To function properly, detention and retention ponds need to be maintained, i.e. mowing, clearing of vegetation, removing trash, etc. Making sure the ponds are properly maintained is a function of EC. More importantly, it is a condition of the County’s stormwater permit. EC’s mission includes providing guidance and helping identify maintenance needs. While EC cannot perform maintenance work or provide specific solutions, EC can answer questions and identify options. EC will work with you to resolve the issues. EC’s goals are to educate the public on proper maintenance and make sure the pond is working properly. If you have any questions about the stormwater program or would like EC to inspect a pond, please contact Melinda Cronenberger at [email protected].
